Frequently Asked Questions

Hey Lowcountry neighbors! We’ve put together answers to the questions we hear most often from Charleston, Bluffton, Mount Pleasant, Hilton Head, and surrounding homeowners and builders. If you don’t see your question here, just give us a call at 843-707-4066 or reach out for a free consultation.

What is spray foam insulation and how does it work?

Spray foam insulation is a high-performance material that’s sprayed as a liquid and expands into a solid foam. It fills every crack, gap, and void in your walls, attic, or crawl space, creating a powerful air seal while providing excellent insulation. Unlike traditional fiberglass, it stops air leaks that cause high energy bills, humidity problems, and mold in our coastal climate.

What are the main benefits of spray foam for Lowcountry homes?

  • Big energy savings — Many homeowners see 20–50% lower heating and cooling costs.

  • Better moisture control — Critical in humid Charleston and Bluffton areas to reduce mold risk.

  • Improved indoor air quality — Blocks dust, pollen, and allergens.

  • Quieter home — Reduces noise from traffic, boats, and outside activity.

  • Long-term durability — It doesn’t settle, sag, or lose performance over time.

Do you offer ENERGY STAR certified products?

Yes! Atlantic Spray Foam is proud to offer ENERGY STAR certified spray foam insulation. Combined with our strong industry partnerships and certifications (including BPI, Charleston Home Builders Association, and Huntsman Building Solutions), we deliver premium performance that meets strict energy efficiency standards.

What types of spray foam do you install?

We primarily install high-quality open-cell (semi-rigid) and closed-cell spray foam, depending on the application. Open-cell is excellent for walls and attics for soundproofing and cost-effectiveness, while closed-cell provides higher R-value and acts as a vapor barrier — ideal for crawl spaces and high-moisture areas.

Is spray foam good for crawl space encapsulation in Charleston?

Absolutely. Crawl space encapsulation with spray foam is one of our most popular services in the Lowcountry. It stops humid air from rising into your living space (over 50% of the air you breathe comes from below), reduces musty smells, controls moisture, and helps prevent mold — a big issue in coastal South Carolina.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Charleston or Bluffton?

Every home is different, but the investment typically pays for itself in energy savings within a few years. Factors include square footage, type of foam, and whether it’s new construction or a retrofit. We offer free, no-pressure consultations and detailed quotes tailored to your property.

How long does installation take?

Most residential jobs are completed in 1–2 days. New construction can often be done in a single visit before drywall. We work efficiently and clean up thoroughly so you can get back to normal quickly.

Is spray foam safe?

Yes. Our products are low-VOC, do not contain urea formaldehyde or harmful CFCs/HCFCs, and are installed by trained, certified professionals. Once cured, it’s completely inert and safe for your family. It even improves indoor air quality by reducing allergens and dust.

Will spray foam help with humidity and mold in coastal homes?

It’s one of the best solutions available. By sealing the building envelope and controlling air movement, spray foam dramatically reduces condensation and moisture intrusion — major causes of mold in the humid Lowcountry.

Can spray foam be installed in existing (retrofit) homes?

Yes. We specialize in retrofits. We can insulate attics, crawl spaces, and even some wall cavities without major demolition. This is a great upgrade for older Charleston single houses, West Ashley homes, and Bluffton properties.

How does spray foam compare to fiberglass or cellulose?

Spray foam outperforms traditional insulation because it air-seals and insulates in one step. Fiberglass often leaves gaps that allow air leakage, loses R-value when wet or compressed, and doesn’t stop moisture movement nearly as effectively — especially important in our hot, humid climate.

Do you serve areas outside of Bluffton and Charleston?

Yes. We proudly serve the entire Lowcountry, including Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, Hilton Head, Beaufort, Ridgeland, and surrounding communities.
